My name is Ellen Messner and I’m a senior at Hope College pursuing a BA in Music with an emphasis in music history and theory. I am also a Mellon Scholar at Hope, a program that has allowed me to explore research in music and work on projects of my own.
I set out to do this project with the intention of exploring an idea that I was interested in, and to gain experience doing fieldwork. I love the idea that throughout our lives, we carry with us the things that mean the most to us. And that music can be a way for us to remember important events and people in our lives. So I’m exploring this relationship between people and music in the form of a handful of informal interviews with citizens of Holland, Michigan.
I’d like to thank the Hope College Mellon Scholars for funding this summer project and for their support and encouragement of research in the Arts and Humanities.
